Informational Interview As a requirement for the Undergraduate Scholars Identity Mentoring program I conducted an informational interview with Dr. Corliss Thompson-Drew. Dr. Thompson-Drew is the lead psychologist at WSFCS (Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools). She has worked as a school psychologist for over thirty-five years. She has held her current position for 18 years and enjoys training future school psychologist. Dr. Thompson-Drew received her bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University. Upon graduation she attended the University of Cincinnati for her masters. And she received her doctorate of psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. When asked to describe her research interest Dr. Thompson-Drew explained that in terms of research she is more interested in the applied side of research, but her professional interest is in consultation, program development, and evaluations, and school crisis intervention. I was interested to learn what led her into the field of school psychology but like most school psychologist she exclaimed that she didn’t originally know that she wanted to pursue school psychology. Like Dr. Thompson-Drew I always knew I wanted to go into psychology, but it took a mentor to say “Hey, have you considered a career in school psychology?” …show more content…
Thompson-Drew’s ideas relating to “social justice.” She mentioned that throughout her career she had always worked with the under privileged, wanting to advocate and be the voice for parents and students alike. But like all people she knew she had to figure out how to make aware of her own biases because she did have them but its critical to understand people come from different places. The field of school psychology is predominately white and predominately female so at times it can be difficult for students of color or even male students to feel relatable to their counselors or school
