Specific Purpose: At the end of my speech, my audience will be able to identify the three components of building a house.
Central Idea/Thesis: To build a house correctly you will need to know all about the foundation, the framing, and the cosmetics of a house.
INTRODUCTION:
A. Did you know that the average cost of a house in 2014 was $175,000? (Trulia, 2014). And did you know that the on average, “homeowners will spend between 1 to 4 percent of a home's value annually on maintenance and repairs?”(Beals, 2015).

2. There are three methods of framing. a. Platform framing is the most common in residential construction today. The frame consists of uniform 2x4’s spaced at specific increments then sheeted over with plywood before being erected on the subfloor which rests on the foundation. Once these walls are all secured they are connected with rafter beam and joists which holds the house together (Chaves, 2014). b. Balloon framing was popular in the mid 1800’s throughout the 1940’s. This method of framing was used in a two story house which consisted on one continuous wood stud from the foundation to the rafter. This method lost its popularity due to fire hazards and the difficulty of finding long wood pieces (Chaves, 2014). c. Last, post and beam framing, aka timber framing, was common in the 1700’s when house were going up in America. It consisted of vertically arranged hand cut pieces secured together with wood pegs and joints. The framing is generally left exposed leaving a rustic look. Rooms in this style of framing had high cathedral ceiling and spacious floor plans (Chaves, 2014).
Transition: Finally, lets look into the cosmetics of a house.
C. The possibilities of the interior and exterior design of a house are endless.
