In Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal a Knight, Antonius Block who has just returned from the Crusades back home to Sweden, which has been ravished by the Black Plague is struggling with his faith and has become disillusioned with Christianity. Upon his return home he is confronted by death, knowing that death has come to take him away Antonius asked death to play a game of chess with him in the hope that by playing this game of chess he can stall his already sealed fate. Death is represented as a man in a long black robe that covers his head, his face is stark white and he looks almost like some sort of religious figure maybe a priest or a monk. The character of Mia a young beautiful mother who is married to Jof, provides a look at the role women played during this time period. I also believe that Jof and Mia's family give Antonius hope in knowing that the plague has not taken everything. Mia and Jof are actors who are traveling and cross paths with Antonius and his squire Jons. In the scene "strawberry's and milk" the group decide to travel on together, Jof tells Mia and Antonius he has visions of spirits and demons in the forest, one of the routs they contemplate taking but Mia thinks this is nonsense, in this moment Antonius gives the impression if Jof can see Death like he sees Death. The playful and flirtation way Jof and Mia interact in this scene brings a smile to Antonius face as he watches Mia pat Jof on the head and clean him up, from being a drunken mess. It is this reality of a family that Antonius has not seen a long time. Mia's character provides an opposite view of life and death than Antonius character. This dichotomy is needed especially when Death shows up on the scene, the viewer knows that life still goes on even if it doesn’t go on for everybody, and Mia and Jofs family represent
