Tattoos have been a popular form of body art for many years. In fact, statisticbrain.com reports that 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo somewhere on their body. But the growing tattoo trend today is lip tattoos. And while any tattoo procedure can be risky, if you’re thinking about getting one on or inside of your lip, you might want to first investigate the specific risks of lip tattoos before going under the needle.

Newer Inks/More Complications
Dermatologists have been seeing more tattoo-related allergic reactions, infections and outcomes that look like skin cancer because of the composition of the inks used today. These newer inks, especially the darker reds and yellows, are made up of dyes containing plastic pigments that are also used for printing, textiles and car paint.
Dr. Michi Shinohara, a dermatologist and professor of dermatology at the University of Washington in Seattle, cautions that an allergic response to the ink, such as itchy rashes and bumps, can occur immediately or even years after the tattoo was done, and people with psoriasis and eczema may have flare ups from a recent tattoo. He also warns tattoo artists not to place a tattoo over a mole, since cancer can occur within the tattoo or a reaction from the ink may look so much like skin cancer that a biopsy will need to be done.
