The research problem of this study is based around the idea in which the rate of understanding genetics is accelerating, and more importantly being able to understand heritability and it’s correlation to the environment has become a foundation to nursing practice as a whole. While the research problem is difficult to find within a dense paragraph, …show more content…
In most recent times, the demands for registered nurse to uses genomic information while providing care to those concerned about their (or their families) health as increased significantly. “Complex diseases such as cardiovascular and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer have disproportionally affected racial and ethnic minority populations (National Center for Health Statistics, 2012)”. Since minority populations are affected, it is seemingly more important to further investigate minority nurses’ knowledge and integration of genetics- genomics in nursing practice. Integrating genetics and genomics into health care can have many beneficial effects; for example, a couple can decide whether or not they will have a healthy baby through genetic testing, or a woman with high risk genetic factors for breast cancer can get tested for the BRCA1 gene to help her decide if she wants to take prophylactic measures to prevent getting breast cancer like a voluntary …show more content…
The purpose of this study was to determine minority nurses’ beliefs, practices, and competency in integrating genetics-genomics in- formation into practice using an online survey tool” (p. 235).
The statement of purpose is worded appropriately, the variables were identified (integration of genetics-genomics information into practice) and the population (minority nurses’) was specified. There were no formally stated research questions or hypothesis. Qualitative methods can be used to explore little understood phenomena such as the educational gaps in minority nurse populations, this is an ‘exploratory’ study therefore it represents qualitative methods. Qualitative studies do not tests hypotheses, however, it is possible for theories to emerge from research data or findings. The absence of a formal hypothesis is therefore justified because this is a qualitative study. Since the study was observed through an online survey, the findings represent quantitative data and the responses obtained were statistical and were analyzed using frequencies and
