Intellectual Disabilities Having Children: Documentary Analysis

There are many arguments on the issues of those with intellectually disabilities having children. One argument in support for this is that the constitution gives everyone the right to marry and raise children and that they should be afforded this right just as other are (Read, 2014). In addition to the constitution giving them this right they do have the ability to be good parents. The ability to raise children and be a good parent cannot be based solely on the concept of intellectual abilities.
There are many other factors that are required in successful parenting. Things like parents’ willingness to raise the child, support services, stress management, and how one was raised themselves all contribute to successful parenting. According to Dickey, 2006, those with low level of intelligence can be compared to teenagers in most cases. These individuals with this low level of intelligence are not really in a position to raise a child just as a teenager is not. These parents themselves need help and support and the views in the documentary support the idea that adding a child into the mix will inevitably complicate their lives even more. Another argument is that it is not fair for these individuals to reproduce as it is not fair to the child as they too may be intellectually challenged.
Taking the perspective of the parents in the documentary, they feel that they are able to be good parents and they should be afforded the opportunity to enjoy how bringing a child into this world and being a parent feels (Read, 2014). While this is a valid point it is also valid that people need to consider both the parent’s and the child’s perspectives. As one of the girls in the documentary stated it is not in the best interest of the child to have parents who cannot give you what you want or
