Interpretation Project 1

In the passage of Mathew 24:45-51, Jesus is explaining to the reader how we should prepare and be ready for His return. Jesus starts out by saying, “A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them”. (V 45). What Jesus is telling us here, in this passage, is that we must continue to take care of His people and by doing His work here on earth both inside and outside the church. In other words we must first take care of our own family members inside the home. Not only must we take care of our own household, we must also do what we were created for and that is to lead others to Christ. Some people will only go to church one hour a week and then will not do anything else the rest of the week. As the parable unfolds, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns”. (V 47). Although we do not know the day or the hour in which Christ will return, the best way for us to get prepared is to continue doing his work. In contrast, Jesus continues by saying, “But what if the servant is evil and thinks, “My master won’t be back for a while”, and begins beating the other servants, partying and getting drunk?” (V 48 & 49). What Jesus is saying here is that the servant who remained faithful will be rewarded but the one who was not faithful will be punished. As Jesus concluded the parable of “The wise and Faithful Servant”, He warns us of what will happen if we do not remain faithful to Him and choose the wicked path. Just as “The Master will return unannounced and unexpected” as mentioned in verse 50, so will Jesus return unannounced and unexpected and whoever is not prepared will be thrown into the lake of fire where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The central message of this short parable is for us to be prepared for the second coming of Christ and to continue doing His work while we are still on this earth and to treat everyone with respect and to show kindness just as Jesus did. As we back up to verse 36, Jesus said, “However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows”. This verse has always been a little hard to comprehend because the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the same entity so how could Jesus not know? Jesus compares the days of Noah leading up to the flood which washed away every inhabitant off the face of this earth to His second coming. Those that were engaging in idolatry, drunkenness, homosexuality and every imaginable evil were left outside the ark and only the righteous and faithful were saved. Although everyone was warned of the flood, all the evil doers just laughed and scoffed at Noah, ignoring the warning. It will be the same when Jesus returns. Even today the signs are there and people have been warned but sadly many people will ignore the warnings and try to come up with some scientific explanation as to why certain events are happening around the world. If we knew the exact day and hour in which Christ will return, then we would be tempted to become lazy in our daily walk with Christ or even continue sinning right up until his return. Moving forward in Mathew 25:1-13, Jesus tells the parable of the Ten Bridesmaids as compared to the kingdom of heaven. “Five were foolish and five were wise. The five that were foolish didn’t take enough olive oil for their lamps, and the other five were wise enough to take along extra olive oil for their
