Part I This episode of “Law and Order” involved a case of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) between a celebrity couple. After a batch of nude photographs of celebrities were widely released on the internet, detectives noticed a video of a retired black National Football League (NFL) player aggressively “spanking” his black wife, and then later carrying her unconscious body through a parking garage. As he is dragging the body in the vehicle, the wife wakes up as a police officer approaches. The officer takes their statements of what they say happened and then releases them. Throughout the court trial, it was shown that Martin had isolated his wife and child from other family and friends, did not allow his wife to hangout with other friends without him, and both his wife and child were afraid of him. Additionally, they were reliant on him for money and resources, so he had all the power and control. Like the incident that occurred in this show, these characteristics were more alluded to than anything. It was reiterated throughout the episode that this was a private matter between husband and wife. This is a similar argument used in the show when it comes to evaluating whether the abuse occurred. The risk factors for IPV perpetration are being male, 18 to 29, any race other than Asian, from a home with a history of domestic violence, and has low socio economic status.
