Savior, counselor, friend, redeemer, shepherd, and I Am, reflect only some of the names brought to mind when confronted with who Jesus is, with a key reference being Immanuel, or God with us. The exhaustive list should speak for itself in that Jesus encompasses every plausible Godly characteristic fathomable to man. While the human race assigns numerous titles to describe Jesus, personal introspection of who Jesus is might differ from that of a worldly viewpoint. Thus, deliberating on Jesus in a biblical sense via the Gospels from a collectivistic and individualistic stance, as well as through a contemporary lens, offers a well-rounded vantage point on His persona. Interestingly, He provided a title in His question, but the point was to draw out information about what the disciples’ perceptions were of the societal climate regarding Jesus. The answers given, such as Elijah, were all incorrect, yet, the notions of Him being a prophet denoted that people viewed Jesus not merely as an ordinary man, but rather a member of a unique class. Biblically, there were many references of Jesus from a global standpoint, either portraying a stature or a trait to describe Him. The people of His home country stated this when He returned to Nazareth, “Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? (Mark 6:3, NKJV). The illustration shows that to some, Jesus’ actions as an adult did not negate that He was human, by serving in a job and living with a regular family just as everyday folk did. As for others, Jesus appeared as the Son of David, and the entry into Jerusalem emphasized His Kingship (Gundry, 2012, p. 218). People remembered what the prophets foretold and equated Jesus to the throne of David. Needless to say, some did not accept Jesus for who He was and a recorded incident with some Jews depicted him as this, “’Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?’” (John 8:48, NKJV). The idea of Jesus as a counselor leaves many feeling comforted, as they believe He knows the status of everyone’s heart. He can discern if there is good or evil within someone, for the Bible stated, “…He knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man” (John 2:24-25, NKJV). Many to this day also relate to Jesus as a teacher who has supreme knowledge, and in spite of also trusting other instructors, they reveal their loyalty through their prayer life in asking for guidance. Adversaries are good at misleading the truth, but Jesus demonstrated his righteousness, and during His day it was known that “…He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes” (Matthew 7:29, NKJV).
