Inuit stone carving has an interesting history that has adapted and transformed throughout the ages. As time has passed the demand for carvings has increased making it a major contemporary artform.

The history of inuit stone carvings starts with the pre-historic period. This is the time before the 1770’s. In this time carvings were made out of stone antlers or bones and were small in size because the inuit people led a nomadic lifestyle. Many of the objects were made as amulets whose purpose was to give protection against evil danger and disease ( I.E. Lucky charm).
