Iodine – 131 Iodine-131 is a product of radioactive fission. After a nuclear explosion, iodine-131 can be released into the atmosphere. It can cause significant harm to humans in large, unregulated amounts. Iodine-131 can cause cancer in the thyroid gland, among other things. However, it can also be a useful tool to for doctors when regulated. After being the atmosphere, iodine-131 can become absorbed by the soil. From the soil, it can be absorbed by plants. Iodine-131 is found especially in leafy plants such as lettuce and kale. Animals, including humans, then eat these plants and ingest the radioactive material.
