“If someone is drowning, you have to give them your hand. When the war started, all of Poland was drowning in a sea of blood, and those who were drowning the most were the Jews. And among the Jews, the worst off were the children. So I had to give them my hand.” (Down 10) Irena Sendler saved thousands of Jewish children from the war. For this reason she should be remembered.
In order to understand Irena Sendler this is her background, Irena Sendler was born on February 5, 1910, in Warsaw, Poland. She was not Jewish but a Roman Catholic. Her father was Stainlislaw, he was a physician. He died in 1917 from typhus. Her mother was Janina, and she was a help with Irena’s job was. Sadly, on May 12, 2008, Irena died of pneumonia.
Irena Sendler was a part of an underground organization in the war. “Sendler, a social worker in the city who worked for a secret underground organization, spirited the children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and placed them in homes or orphanages in the countryside under false names.” (Irena Sendler) Irena started bringing medical

“Sendler’s activities attracted the attention of the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police agency, and she was arrested in October of 1943. In prison she was beaten and tortured, but refused to divulge any details of her work or the names of her fellow humanitarians. She was sentenced to death, but the Polish government in exile in London, which funded Zegota, managed to bribe a guard and Sendler was able to escape. Her name was still on the list of those were to be shot that day, however, so she was forced to live underground for the remainder of the war.” (Irena Sendler). If Irena Sendler would of had died that day she would not had been remembered for what she is today.
