Movement has always been an inseparable aspect of our human experience. We are bipedal creatures that through movement have spread our species to all parts of the world. That alone is enough to discuss indefinitely. In a more individual level, movement serves as a medium of communication. Being part nature, we share this quality with almost all creatures. Movement is fundamental, its understanding the complex interrelation dynamics found on all aspects of life. In dance this could not be truer. To a dancer movement is literally everything; it is the canvas through which life is expressed in a compartmentalized sequence. Dance and movement are one; therefore all components of movement can be applied to dance. It is this line of thought that inspired minds like Rodulf Laban. He developed the first theoretical concept for notating movements in dance. His work served as the stepping stone for dancers. One of his students was multidisciplinary dancer, Irmgard Bartenieff. She received a Laban diploma when finishing the program. After working and teaching with Laban for a few years, she was force to fled to North America, with her husband Michail Bartenieff, a Russian Jewish ballet dancer(1). Michail and Irmgard Bartenieff had their own company, Romantic Dance Theater, which toured through Germany before it was forced out during the harsh time when Hitler was in power. Subsequent to fleeing Germany and leaving their two sons, she was the first and only person to hold the Laban certificate in the United States (2).Leading her to her much ground breaking discoveries, and developing Bartenieff Fundamentals. After two years, she was able to return to Germany to get her two sons.
