The play theme was music because it included many songs that was written by Irving Berlin, while he was responding to the judge who was questioning him.
Most of the songs that were sang during the show were used by Berlin character to convince the judge that he is American even though he was born in Russia. Berlin has written many songs for america such as "God bless America" which became the unofficial national anthem of U.S.A . He also written songs to support the army of the united states. Berlin was ranked as one of the top five song writers in America. His music and songs has touched the life of many Americans. So the meaning behind the play in my opinion is that a musician or a songwriter or even an artist does not have to be an American
