“I felt as if somebody was after me. Often, my shadows would scare me and cause me to run for miles. Everything felt awkwardly brutal even the air seemed to want to attack me and break me neck.” (Beah 49). Ishmael Beah was born into a country where a civil war broke out when he was young he felt this way at the age of twelve. Ishmael Beah and I have similar beliefs and different opportunities. Ishmael had an education that provided him with basic skills and knowledge. Both Ishmael and I have similar beliefs that our families have raised us with.

Ishmael Beah was touched by war when he was twelve, just based off of that fact alone Ishmael and my opportunities and experiences are very different. Just before Ishmael was twelve he was not attending school because his father refused to pay. This is different from my experience because I am in a good school, and my family had enough money to pay for my education. Ishmael did not finish his education until he moved to New York. Ishmael became a soldier when he was thirteen years old. He was in the Sierra Leone Civil War for two years. Finally after two years of revenge and cruelty he was chosen to be taken out of war and given the opportunity to recover. Beah and I have both been raised in a household where we learned that family is very important because they will be there when you do not have any friends to rely on. Another aspect of our life that we have been raised to always remember is to treat everyone equally despite who the are. Ishmael knew that even though he did really cruel acts during the war that he was a very kind and caring person behind the mask of revenge, fear, and drugs.
