Isolation is one of the foremost human torments, from Castaway to bullies on the playground. However, the hardships of exile bear the fruit of knowledge and enlightenment that never could have occurred without adversity. Huxley embodies this phenomenon perfectly through John the Savage. By his exile from civilization in the reserves, he is singled-out for his mother’s way of life. Upon his emergence to the outside world he then realizes the luxuries of independence he possessed while in isolation and determines to live freely and as an individual. John’s childhood was a lonely series of being the odd man out in every social event with his peers. Since his mother had grown accustomed to multiple companions, his name was smeared with a bad
