Walden is a book that focuses on Thoreau’s stay at Walden Pond and what he learns of himself and values during his stay. The chapters I would focus on would be Walden’s winter chapters. The Winter Animals chapter shows the effect of isolation on Thoreau very well. Due to the harsh Massachusetts winter, Thoreau has very little contact with others and therefore becomes more and more isolated as winter goes on. He becomes very infatuated with the animals around him and describes these animals with human-like qualities. This shows how isolation can change an individual’s psyche and lead him to go a little crazy, for lack of a better term, during that isolation period.
