The natural landscape and the winter storm in “The Painted Door” serve as a metaphor for Anne’s sense of isolation. Sinclair Ross depicts “an encroaching chill” weather which is directly parallel to what happens with Anne. Anne’s husband John is a hardworking individual yet, he still fails to meet some of the needs of Anne. Anne needs “something of John” and when she can’t obtain that from John, her inner emotion of loneliness takes over and she gives in to Steven. Just like how the winter chill invades Anne’s house, Steven also invades Anne’s inner self and takes advantage of her sense of isolation. To overlook this sense of isolation, Anne decides to paint the house door. “Since November now the paint [white] had been waiting”
