One of the issues facing incarcerated women is the conditions of the prisons they are housed. According to our textbook, “U.S. women’s prisons changed relatively little from the beginning of the 20th Century (Belknap 2015:232). Belknap goes on to explain that women’s prisons have always been smaller in size and fewer in availability. Another issue with the women’s prison system is that the buildings and programs within the judicial system are created for and by men and then women are allowed access to them. Most of the programs within the judiciary are designed to meet men’s needs, so they do not meet the rehabilitation needs of women. One is the reason they do not meet women’s needs is that male and female offenses differ in type and severity.
