In the essay “Rituals and Traditions; It Takes a Tribe,” Yale graduate and author, David Berreby, argues that in all aspects of life and specifically college, it is instinctual for humans to search for groups where they can find a sense of belonging and acceptance. Throughout the essay, Berreby highlights the significance of the idea of “us” and “them” that is created by the formation of different social groups. This idea of “us” and “them” is exemplified through interviews with college students which shows how prevalent Berreby’s idea is on college campuses.
