There was a huge worship and devotion towards the Virgin Mary, reason why the scene of the Annunciation is one of the most painted. This particular event represents the moment where the Angel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary that she will become pregnant with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The Holy Spirit that is mostly represented by a white dove makes the conception. That specific type of flowers is the one that is in charge of representing the virginity and the purity of Mary. Instead in this painting, another detail from nature is used “a little garden behind Gabriel is a hortus conclusus (enclosed garden) symbolizes Mary’s virginity” (Walters website.) The colors of the clothing are also somehow different. Mary is wearing her blue robe with gold color details, but the angel Gabriel wears a reddish robe and his wings are of multiple colors as well.
