In the novel by Ned Vizzini, "it's kind of a funny story", the protagonist Craig Gilner contemplates thoughts of suicide. The book is written in first person point of view, giving the reader a direct perspective into Craig's thoughts and the things in his life that lead into his attempt to kill himself. The beginning of the book takes place in Craig's best friend Aaron's house. He's with all his friends, Aaron, Ronny, and Nia (also Aaron's girlfriend) in the living room playing video games and smoking pot, "typical teenage stuff". He narrates his thoughts about how he doesn't feel the happiness he used to feel, he wishes everything would go back to how it used to be. No responsibilities, just simplicity. He doesn't feel "normal"
