Grimes and Professor Tilton had the very hard task of performing the chemical Analysis on the ax that was used in the murder and of the hair found on the ax and around the crime scene. In the 1900s they didn’t have the technology to do DNA test so their expertise and judgment were extra crucial to getting the right analysis done. Their testimony was an opinion of what that thought they had discovered the tool used in the murder. They testified that they had found blood of a fowl on the handle of the ax but they had also found other traces of blood that they believed was human. If so that means it would be the blood of Mr. Hossack. Dr. Grimes also stated that the handle appeared to have been washed in order to remove the blood from it. It was also mentioned that the blood on the axe had arrived there with great force, yes it could have been from a fowl, or it could have come from an artery that had been stuck with great force as well.
