When Watson was injured by a bullet, my reaction surprised both of us in a lovely way. I realized that I cared about him more than anyone in the entire world. He is the one person that I care about anywhere near to as much as myself. One of my favorite cases I ever took was in the autumn of 1890. A man by the name Jabez Wilson came to me. I remember him easily by his stunningly red hair and his obsession with money. He told me that he had a job in the Red Headed League. The job paid him very well and had short working hours. His main job was to copy an encyclopedia by hand. He went into work one day, to find that the league had dissolved without his notice. My job was to find out what had happened to the Red Headed League, and I knew exactly where to begin.
I proceeded to smoke three pipes and drag Watson to a concert with me. I went to ask Spaulding for directions to the concert. On the knees of Spaulding’s pants, I saw just what I was hoping to see.
