The Whitechapel Murderer
Jack the ripper mutilated and cut out body parts of women in England of 1888. All his victims were prostitutes, which made people believe he was trying to do society a favor. He was also known as “The Whitechapel Murderer” or “The East-end fiend” Jack the ripper has had a major impact on today’s history, because he was one of the first serial killers in the world, which made many women terrified to go out on London’s streets.
England in 1888 was a very wealthy country, with approximately four million people. The east end of Great Britain had bad neighborhoods, which had a great amount of crime, and several immigrants, mainly the Irish and the Jews. There was lots of overcrowding. Annie was forty- seven years old. She was married, but her husband had died. They had three children, one had died and the other was sent to an institution because of disability. She became an alcoholic and had done prostitution as well. She had a disease of the brain and lungs, which would have led to death a few years later. September 30th Jack the Ripper killed two women, Elizabeth Stride and Kate Eddowes. (Who was jack the ripper) The first body they found was still warm. She probably hadn’t been dead for more than twenty minutes. Her body was not cut in the abdomen like the others. They believe he may have been interrupted. (Anderson) All the murders happened within one mile of each other, but people feared the whole city.(Bio.com.) The police had received letters, sent supposedly by the killer. They had come from all over the world and had many different handwritings, so most were fake. There were three main letters that the police, may have really been from the killer. The first main letter started out saying “Dear boss” and the second main later was on a “Saucy Jacky” postcard. These were both the first to use the name “Jack the Ripper.” The Saucy Jack postcard had mentioned the double event, before it had even happened. “You will soon hear of me with my funny little games… My knifes so nice and sharp, I want to get to work right away if I get a chance.” This is a piece of the “dear boss letter” (Anderson) After the fifth murder, the killings randomly stopped. Even though they never found who the real Jack the Ripper was, they had many suspects and theories on who it could have been. One theory is that he may have actually been a girl. Since he never sexually assaulted any of the women, it made people think he may have actually been a girl. They also suspect that he was a cannibal because he would tear out parts of the body. They do suspect that the person was intelligent, with some kind of medical knowledge. All the killings happened on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which led them to believe that he had a regular job throughout the
