Hi I am Virne Beatrice Mitchell also known as Jackie Mitchell, or “The Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth”. I was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on August 29, 1913 to Dr. Joseph and Virne Wall Mitchell. Event #2 By the time I was 17 years old I attended a special baseball school in Atlanta, Georgia. During that time Joe Engle saw my talent in baseball and offered me a contract to play for the Chattanooga Lookouts for the entire 1931 season.
Event #3 March 28, 1931, I signed the contract. At that moment I became an official member of the Chattanooga Lookouts, a Class AA minor League baseball team.

On April 2,1931 at Engel Stadium, the Chattanooga Lookouts played against the New York Yankees. As I went out onto the field I looked up into the stadium to see 4000 faces all looking down onto the field.

On that same day I was not the start off pitcher but I was the second. When Babe Ruth went up to bat my coach waved me over to the mound. I threw 4 pitches the count was 2-2, I threw a pitch right down the middle and Ruth swung and missed.

After I struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig was next up to bat. I pitched him 3 pitches right down the middle for the umpire to call “Strike, You’re Out”!
