Canterbury Tales Although The Merchant is a commoner, he is classified as being in the wealthy class. He is a seller of goods. The Merchant appears to be high maintenance because of his fashion choice and is very egotistical and selfish. Chaucer says “he told of his opinions and pursuits in solemn tones, and how he never lost” (284-285). The Merchant is a man who speaks highly about himself and his appearance. Additionally, The Merchant is hard working and diligent. Chaucer explains “this estimable merchant so had set his wits to work. None knew he was in debt” (289-290). He is very smart but does not know how to handle his money which is clearly portrayed by his cloak and hat. In The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, he plays a part similar to the role of a merchant. Leonardo DiCaprio makes money illegally. Leonardo and The Merchant have much in common considering they both put on a show to make themselves appear bigger than what they are, giving off a false outer shell.
Additionally, the Yeoman, a member of the court dressed to impress. Chaucer explains that the Yeoman is a wealthy servant. Chaucer describes that the yeoman “wore a coat and hood of green and peacock feathered arrows” (105). The peacock feathers were very uncommon making the rare appearance worth something more during the religious pilgrimage. This implies he may steal or be a highway man. This also can be suggested by Chaucer’s explanation, “it from the bow string and shield and sword hung at one side and at the other slipped. A jaunty dirk spear sharped and well equipped” (118). There’s no reason for the yeoman to have all of these weapons and nice clothing going on a religious pilgrimage. This suggests Steve Martin would be a great fit for this role. In The Pink Panther, Martin plays the role of a French man who tries to steal a diamond from Beyonce’s bag.
