Sawyer on June 1, 1866. Five years later, on June 23, 1871, they were divorced. On October 3, 1871, Jacob married Margaret C. Davis in Logansport, Indiana. They had three children, Thomas (b. 1/20/1873) and Leroy (b. 12/6/1875). A daughter, born in 1877, died when she was two years old. In 1888, the family moved to Ontario, California, where he made a living working as a carpenter. Jacob's arm never recovered from the injury he suffered at Gettysburg. He was bothered by the wound for the rest of his life. In 1873, he received a benefit of $2 a month for his disability. However, his wound grew worse over time. On November 1, 1896, in order to save his life, his arm was amputated 6 inches above his elbow. Being right handed, he was unable to do much work after that.
