Jacques-Louis David (Jock-lwi-da-vi-d) was a French painter born in 1748.
His was considered to be a Neoclassical painter and a supporter of the French Revolution.
David is widely considered to be the most prevalent painter of Neoclassical Era.
His ideals brought closure to the elaborate Rococo style of painting and replaced it with a revival of classic antiquity.
David was born into a wealthy family but lost his father when he was killed in a duel. David’s mother sent him to live with his successful uncles.
His care takers saw to it that he receive a good education.
They sent him to the College of Four Nations.
David was not an exemplary student and was caught more often than not doodling on his notebooks.

Shortly after moving into the Louvre, he married the Kings contractor’s daughter.
He received many commissions from the royal family and took on students of his own.
After a while, David decided that he wanted to return to Rome if he was to paint Roman works.
He took his family and several students with him.
David continued to paint and send works to the Royal Academy.
During this time, he decided he wanted to become the Director of the French Academy.
The Academy denied him his request in 1787 saying he was still too young.
They told him that in a few short years they would reconsider and support him in the role.
As David continued to paint, his works were aligning with the political climate at the time.
The Royal academy took notice of this.
David’s politically charged submissions to the Salon stopped receiving high honors.
Before the next Salon opening, the French Revolution began.
The Royal Family did not want any sort of pro-revolution propaganda introduced to the show.
All the entries were checked prior to being hung to avoid getting the public worked up.
