James Baldwin's Essay 'Alas, Poor Richard'

Words: 132
Pages: 1

James Baldwin describes his relationship with Richard Wright in his essay, “Alas, Poor Richard”, and he mainly talks about being black authors. He uses the word “negro” so many times so that this reveals that he wants to make the society think about the discrimination. Even though the essay contains the word “negro” a lot, it is really about the relationship between two black authors. Richard was his idol, and when he first met him he showed him his novel and Richard decided to read its first sixty or seventy pages. The essay is well organized, because it was said in timely order. I read it as a diary of a black author writing his days with his idol author. His narrative style makes the essay tend to be assumed a diary.
