James Luna challenged the way that museums have presented his race as cloth, feather wearing, and extinct people. He used his body as a way to criticize the stereotypes of Native Americans in cultural displays. Both pieces dealt with the perception of Native Americans and their ethnic identity. In the Artifact Piece, Luna questioned American Indian presentation that is displayed in many museums. Luna challenged viewers to reconsider what museums often teach about certain cultures and what a cultural artifact really is. I believe museums choose to keep and view certain “artifacts” and they can sometimes destroy and ignore other important artifacts.
