The main purpose of James Madison and the Making of America is to inform. Gutzman states, “James Madison prescribed no monument at all. For decades, his grave lay unadorned among those of some of his relatives. In the end, it was finally marked by a monument bearing the name ‘Madison’ and the dates of his birth and death.
