Discussed in James Surowiecki’s article “The Case for Free Money” universal basic income (U.B.I.) is argued to better the economy, lower poverty rates, and make citizens happier.
The idea of basic income originated in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada it was referred to as Mincome. The effects of basic income on Dauphin included a decrease in, hospitalization and teen dropout rates, and did so without harshly affecting the employment rates. If tested in the United States universal basic income would supply each U.S. adult citizen with a stipend. While it has been discussed by both sides of the political spectrum in the past currently many right wings have disagreed. With multiple countries discussing and testing the U.B.I. it may actually become "universal"
