First of all, one reason the colonist started dying was because of the New World, they weren't use to the environment which lead them to disease. They also didn't have any type of medicine or proper technology to help cure these diseases they had gotten. So these diseases and illnesses would just slowly kill the colonists. Also, these colonists never knew anything about curing these diseases.
The colonists had gotten these diseases from many possibilities, back then the colonists didn't even know of such things we all know as, “germs” so they wouldn't be the most sanitary. This drought had been happening months before their arrival. What sucked even more was that the colonists wells had dried up and evaporated so they had no drinking water but the river which was already dirty. This drought made it very hard to farm and grow crops so the colonists started to lack food. This lead to the colonists to trade with the Native Americans, but that didn't go so well for the colonists. Many colonists had to travel far to even reach the Natives, which it wasn't even a for sure thing the trade would even happen. According to Document D, it states, “..Francis West and thirty-six men (sailed) up to the Chesapeake Bay to try to trade or corn with the Patawomeke Indians..” If the trades worked out well, whatever the indians had traded (food wise) would help a lot during the starvation times.
