Jane quits her job, returns home, and works as a waitress to save enough money for a boat fare. On April 2nd, 1957, at the age of 23, Jane travels to Kenya by boat. During her visit, she meets Louis Leakey, a famous anthropologist, and paleontologist. Jane impresses Leakey with her knowledge of Africa's wildlife, that he hires her to be his assistant. On July 4th, 1960, Jane arrives on the shore of Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve in western Tanzania. At first, studying the chimpanzees were not easy for Jane Goodall. The chimps fled from Jane in fear, but with patience and determination, she searched the forest every day and trying not to get too close to the chimpanzees. Gradually the chimps got used to Jane being around and they let her closer. Jane found out that chimpanzees are meat eaters, which disapproved of the wildly held belief that chimps were vegetarian.
