For instance Menelaus after opening Agamemnon’s leter wanted him to kill his daughter Iphigenia. In the agon of the tragedy, Menelaus tells Agamemnon,”That is just the time when his friends ought to be able to count on him, when his prosperity enables him to do more for them than ever”(Euripides Iphigenia at Aulis 322). Menelaus wants Agamemnon to follow the prophecy and kill Iphigenia because the greeks need this. If Agamemnon is able to help out in any way then he should because the greeks count on him. Agamemnon is the leader of the Greek host, he should put his people first. Furthermore agamemnon did not tell Iphigenia at first that he needs to sacrifice her. He feared she would run and he needed her to come to him. Clytemnestra found this information and then told Achilles,”So he made the marriage a pretext. And then the marriage brought me here(Euripides Iphigenia at Aulis 334). Agamemnon did not tell Clytemnestra about the sacrifice because he feared that he would tell Iphigenia and have her run away. There would be no wind without his sacrifice to Artemis and it would be a disaster for the Greeks. Moreover Agamemnon finally agreed to sacrificing his daughter to Artemis. For instance Oedipus’s biological parents, King Laius and Queen Jocasta tried to send him to die at mount cithaeron due to the fact that they feared the prophecy. When Oedipus is on the verge of finding out the truth he questions the Shepherd, “My wife- she gave it to you?...Why what for”(Sophocles Oedipus the King 1008)? The Shepherd replies by saying, “To kill it... she was afraid...frightening prophecies”(Sophocles Oedipus the King 1008). Jocasta feared that Oedipus’s prophecy would come true so she had to get rid of him. It would be worse for him to live. The suffering came from Jocasta and Laius strong fear of the prophecies. Moreover Oedipus couldn’t bear in order to see what he did so he blinds himself. The messenger tells the leader of the chorus Oedipus had said, “You, you’ll see no more the pain I suffered, all the pain I caused”(Sophocles Oedipus the King 1011)! Oedipus feared finding the answer of Laius’s murder when he realized he could be in relation to Laius. He wanted to find the truth to save Thebes until the truth became too powerful for him to hear.
