Several characters in the novel Jasper Jones have secrets that they hide from people. At times it’s for personal gain but sometimes it’s just because they’re afraid. These are times where they feel that if they tell the truth that it will just cause people to become miserable and restless. This is why they decide to bury their head in the sand and just try and hide the truth. However, it is often said that the truth will set you free. That it’ll be better in the long run for you to tell people the truth than to keep it a secret and hide what you know. It is best to embrace the truth for this reason.
In the novel, Charlie’s mother is often seen coming home late at night. Charlie also mentions the fact that she has come home drunk before, and smelled of perfume and wine and something sour and sweaty. Later on we find out that she does have a something that she’s been keeping secret. Charlie finds out about this when he stumbles upon their car on his way to Jasper’s spot. She has a ‘secret’ lover that she’s been going out at night with on several occasions. In the next chapter we find out that his mother has left him and his father behind. She left Corrigan.
