Jazz Festival I attended the Cameron Jazz Festival on Tuesday, March 29. The concert showcased the Cameron University Jazz ensemble and the Cameron University /Lawton Community Jazz ensemble. Both conducted by Dr. Andrew Stonerock. The concert also featured the Funky Fresh Trio from Denver, Colorado. It was held in the Cameron University theatre. The concert in entirety was from 7:30-9:00 P.M. Luckily, I sat a couple rows back from the stage. I say luckily because the first tune by the Cameron/ Lawton Jazz ensemble was incredibly powerful. In my opinion, opening with such a boisterous was a bit risky. They seemed to play more upbeat and fun style with overall enjoyable tunes. The songs were all mostly major keys with faster tempos, which I believe was a good choice. I particularly liked the very last tune played by the Cameron University Jazz ensemble. It was an excellent choice, leaving me and my friends talking about how pleasant the entire concert was. The Funky Fresh Trio was of course made up of three musicians all of which were male. Josh Quinlan on the saxophone, Alejandro Castano on drums, and Patrick McDevitt on the bass. All three were absolutely amazing musicians. Josh Quinlan played multiple saxophone solos, and they were entirely wonderful. He is an utterly tremendous musician. In fact, the whole trio was. I am thankful they were a part of the concert! Only complaint or disappoint regarding the concert was that I didn’t get to hear Dr. Stonerock on the saxophone, because according to his wife, he is one excellent musician. Maybe he’ll play for us one day in class. Overall, my first experience of a Jazz concert was far better than the reserved thoughts I had before taking this course. American Popular Music really has opened my eyes to enjoy different kinds of music for a variety of reasons. Attending the Cameron University Jazz Festival was a decision I am grateful I made.
