Known as “the original dove in congress” because of her pacifist views, Jeannette Rankin was the first born of seven siblings in 1880. She was born on a ranch in Grant Creek, Montana to John and Olive Rankin. John was a Canadian Immigrant and Olive was from New Hampshire. Jeannette’s father ran the ranch and was also a lumber businessman. Her mother was an elementary school teacher (Tórrez, 2010).
Norma Smith (2002) described young Jeannette as “the liveliest and most individualistic of all” (pg. 34) when comparing Jeanette to her siblings. She was also known for being opinionated and stubborn as well as caring and sensitive. As the oldest sibling, she was expected to care for her younger siblings and the household. Jeannette’s siblings saw
