I have never been a fan of reality television. I rarely watch it, and while it is entertaining, it has had a generally negative effect on society. The Bachelor presents itself as a reality TV show where a man finds love with 1 of 25 women that compete for his hand in marriage, but really it's sexist and harmful to women by hurting their image, treating them poorly, and suggesting unrealistic views on love.
Society has painted a picture that women should not wear the pants in the relationship. This is seen in our culture today in shows like The Bachelor. Society has also made finding a rich husband to live with such an ideal situation that women value this more than anything else. When talking about the show, the author of the book Reality Bites Back, Jennifer L. Pozner said "That [women] don't want or have any professional or personal goals, that we don't want or have any sexual fantasies, and that men get to make all of the decisions. Wanting to be successful in their own way is frowned upon in the show, and it discourages women from wanting to be successful. They basically say a woman's purpose is to get married, have kids and raise a family. I would point out that another problem is that these people are not going to be good parents.
This generation is suffering from shows and media like this in the way that unrealistic beauty standards are being held up as the number one thing to shoot for. Girls and women are suffering from this. They think they need to dress and act a certain way to get a man’s attention, which is basically in very tight and revealing clothing. Most of these women undergo some sort of plastic surgery or transformation to look better.
