Jessica Mc Douglas is a ten year old student in grade three at her local primary school. Jessica’s last report card showed that she struggles with mathematical concepts. It also states that Jessica has had a significant number of days absent due to the family travelling overseas to see family back in Scotland. Jessica’s mathematics textbook ‘Maths plus 3’ by (O’Brien & Purcell 2013, pp 5-139) has numerous pages not started or being completed, these pages represent units of measure, capacity, litres, centimetres, grams, kilograms, and millilitres.
At the beginning of the diagnostic assessment Jessica displayed non- productive disposition Reys, Linquist, Lambdin & Smith (2012, p.14) and was fidgety due to nervousness and boredom. …show more content…
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], (2012, n.p), Measurement and Geometry strand ACMMG061 was incorporated to assist Jessica with measuring, ordering and comparing objects using familiar metric units of length, mass and capacity. The diagnostic assessment also included Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority [ACARA], (2012, n.p) ACMNA054 recognising and explaining the connection between addition and subtraction. ACMNA055 recalling addition facts for single-digit numbers and subtraction facts further enhancing development of efficient mental strategies for computation whilst ACMSP067 conduct experiments to identify and describe possible outcomes whilst recognising variations in results. The sessions also incorporated the Literacy strand ACELY1676 listening to and commit to conversations and discussions by sharing information and ideas in collaborative situations and the Science strand ACSIS055 using appropriate equipment to make and record observations using familiar formal measurements whilst using a variety of tools to make …show more content…
Jessica is ten years of age and falls in the “formal operational stage” of development. According to Piaget this stage of development is able to apply “logical reasoning processes” with the ability to “test hypothesis through manipulating one variable while holding other variables constant” (pp. 198-202). It was also beneficial as Reys, Linquist, Lambdin & Smith (2012) contend to look for “conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competency, adaptive reasoning and productive disposition (p.14) whilst working with the
