In the beginning of this extract, Renee Watson presents Jade’s feelings towards the mentorship program as something she wants to look forward to, but slowly starts to lose hope in using powerful vocabulary. When Jade sees the woman who enters the room, Jade describes her as ’regal’ and says that she ‘carries herself in a way that makes me sit up in my seat’. By using the word regal, it tells the audience that Jade thought well of the mysterious woman, and hoped for her to be her mentor. Renee Watson also wrote that the woman made Jade ‘sit up in her seat’. From this, the readers can infer that Jade was eager to meet this person — assuming that she was her mentor — and was looking forward to progressing through the mentorship program. Further on in this extract, Renee Watson also presents Jade’s feelings towards the mentorship program as something she’s disappointed in and regrets by using rhetorical questions, alliteration, the rule of three and short sentences. When Jade’s mentor doesn’t show up, Jade starts to feel more, and more negative towards the program, Jade says things to express it such as ‘Am I really going to be the loser girl who’s mentor stood her up?’ From this quote, we can infer that Jade is afraid of being embarrassed and being seen as a ‘loser girl’ due to her mentor not attending the program. When Renee Watson uses the rhetorical question, it helps the audience to interpret the fact that Jade is slowly losing any hope and motivation she feels towards not only the program, but her mentor too. Furthermore, when Jade and the other mentors and mentees play a word game to have fun, Jade turns it into something she can use to think about the annoyance and irritation she has for her absent mentor.
