During the second half of the 19th century, following the American Civil War, Black Americans were continually faced with discriminatory injustices despite the passing of the recent Reconstruction Amendments. The Civil War simply terminated slavery but not racism, so many Southern states took advantage of its exploitation by enacting the infamous Black Codes. The codes severely restricted the ability of Black individuals to achieve their autonomy by depriving them of the right to vote and own property. Along with the Black Codes arrived the Jim Crow era, a period of racial segregation, which prompted Homer Plessy to protest his way up to the Supreme Court.
