Joan Hamilton talks about a massive fire that occurred at Perkins Canyon on September 8 2013. It was a horrible tragedy that forced 100 homes to be evacuated and burned over 3,100 acres of meadow, chaparral, and woodland. The devastation was palpable but what Joan considered the heart of Perkins Canyon was untouched. At first Hamilton was appalled by the way the bulldozers, that helped put out the fire, had rammed and leveled trees in an area that had no signs of fire. But once she realized the road was necessary to stop the fire she understood that the destruction was not needless. Joan continued to return and continued to see life return to the burnt land. Apparently the ground underneath was quite safe even during a fire which protected
