Joan of Arc, also known as the maid of Orleans, was a key turning point in the Hundred Year War. She was born to a tenant farmer around 1412. She was not taught to read or write, but her mother taught her to love the church and its teachings. During the time she grew up, France had been torn apart by the Hundred year war that England happened to be winning. The crown prince Charles of Valois was disinherited from his throne by a treaty in 1420, so King Henry V and VI ruled France. Because of this, many in Joan's village had to abandon their homes. When Joan was 13, she started hearing voices she said were sent by God. She said God wanted her to save France by expelling the troops of the English and helping Charles become king. She had to dress as a man to make the 11-day trip through enemy land to the princes' palace. Joan swore to Charles that she would see him crowned at the traditional site of French coronations. She asked for an army to fight at Orleans, a city which the English were occupying. Charles gave her the army against the wished of his advisers, and Joan left for Orleans in March of 1429. It's said that she was wearing her iconic white armor and riding a white horse. She sent a letter to taunt the enemy, and led several attacks against them until they were forced across the river. After her great victory, word of Joan spread throughout France. She took Charles to the coronation grounds and took any towns that fought back. He became King Charles VII in July 1429. Joan said the French should use their advantage and gain back Paris, but Charles did not. At the same time, some of his closest friends were warning him that Joan was becoming too powerful.
