Being illiterate Joe is still eager to learn to read and write just like Pip does. Joe also tries to do better for himself by creating a better life and being happy for himself. In Joe’s eyes, he sees himself as a hardworking old fashioned blacksmith that helps anyone in need. Joe will help anyone he can when he sees someone in need of help but, at the same time he takes care of his needs too. Joe learns to keep his feelings to himself, but it also teaches him to do better for himself. Joe is a positive father figure in the movie Great Expectations because he protects and takes care of Pip like a father. Joe realizes he has many ways he admires Pip and how important he really is. Another thing Joe learns in the movie is to create a better life for himself by doing better. Mr. Gargery is a positive character throughout the whole movie because he takes care of the people he truly cares about. For example, Joe never yelled or abused anyone, if he had done anything he protected the person being threatened. Joe believes in himself and what was right, which made him a braver and stronger
