The artworks that you view are all result of the interaction between ideas and actions. During art making processes, artists respond to the perceptions and thoughts from their own cultural background, gaining conceptual basis and subject matters. These artists then use these internal and external influences to produce an artwork that maximizes their envisioned ideas and manipulate these in order to express their ideas in a physical form. Conceptually, the artist who has inspired me is Australian painter Joel Rea as he conveys his religious persuasion of the uncontrollable and potential power of nature. In my material practice, the Korean painter, Park Dae-Sung’s modernistic ink wash paintings of traditional landscapes has caught my attention as his unique reinterpretation of tradition complements my ideas of the nature through the contrast of delicate and bold brushworks. With the use of juxtaposition, Joel makes the audience on settled in their perception and emphasizes the blind force of nature. Also, his artwork has a deep correlation to my conceptual basis as a result of the inspiration he offered towards the notion of the combination of cultures. The artist illustrates the energetic and mighty power of nature by his use of realistic tone, texture and colours. The unique characteristic of his artwork is that the artist expresses his Christian view of the world with his delicate and realistic style of painting. By conveying his cultural background into his work, he presents the audience with a surreal and dreamy mood, offering us the imagined sensation of being a part of another culture, while admiring the magnitude of its greatness. I ask myself this, how can I manipulate my Asian cultural background with the familiar Australian landscape to reproduce to the viewer a remarkably new and exotic
