After studying the genre of mystery and the variety of sub genres that fit into it such as history’s mysteries, supernatural mysteries, and true crime, it has become apparent to me how mystery fits into our world. While mystery in itself serves to fulfill the human desire for curiosity, subgenres of it serve as a means to fulfill individual desires and queries about the world. Mystery as a genre gives society an outlet for which individuals can explore their own individual fears and inquiries about the world around them. One of the largest and most popular sub genres of mystery is supernatural mysteries. These mysteries delve into realms beyond the natural world we live in, exploring the unexplainable and tapping into the universal fear of ghosts and the paranormal. However, his novel was still widely popular and was considered a nationwide bestseller in the 1960’s, which leads to the question; if his methods and motive for writing a novel about a massacre committed against an innocent family were so egregious, why did people keep reading it? The simple answer to this question is that people are curious. The novel was the first of its kind, and so-called normal individuals were desperate to know the intricacies and details of the mind of a person or people who could kill another human. People desire to understand the unknown, even if it means potentially supporting a self-fulfilling author. Though In Cold Blood was one of the first to do so, true crime as a genre has expanded enormously since its publication.
