John Charles Fremont was born on January 16, 1813 in Savannah, Georgia to Charles Fremont and Ann Beverly Whiting. He died July 13, 1890 in New York City.
Fremont grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and later went to the College of Charleston. He met and married Jessie Benton in October 1841. She was a great help to her husband with his surveying and in his political career.
Fremont did many things in his life. He was a teacher of mathematics, helped survey a railroad, and served as a second lieutenant in the United States Corp of Topographical Engineers. He was taught by Joseph N. Nicollet about surveying and managing an exploration.
