As a result of Sam Houston's actions towards his political career, John F. Kennedy has chosen Houston due to his acts of political courage. Houston was one of the most dramatic, unique, popular, and independent figures in the Senate and after his decision to refuse supporting the Kansa-Nebraska Act of 1845, Sam went against his party, being the only Southern Democrat to vote against the act. Said act, brought rage upon his constituents with rumors of his political demise at bay. After announcing his plan to run for governor, Houston was defeated due to his refusal during the Kansas-Nebraska Act. However, he did run again two years later, with his victory being a major setback for Southern pro-slavery extremist. Though, despite Houston's attempt,
